Fun & Easy Family Devotions: Verse 8 | Devotion 1 – Isaiah 41:10

Devotion

She lay in bed crying softly. The inky darkness of the room seemed to slowly close in around her. She felt so alone. She wanted to cry out for someone to come, but was too scared to even form the words. She could go to her parents, but opening the door to the cavernous hallway was too overwhelming.

Though her bedroom was a place of delight during the day, once darkness fell and the comforting hum of a home full of people fell away, the night began to overcome her. The moment her mom walked out of the door and switched off the light, the fears and worries started to flood her mind. What if the house caught fire? What if someone broke through the front door and hurt my brother or sister? What if a monster came out of the closet?

Isaiah 41:10 says, “Fear not for I am with you; be not dismayed, For I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” When we feel alone and overcome with fear, we can focus on the truth that God is with us. He promises to never leave or forsake us (Hebrews 13:5). He will strengthen, help, and uphold us. Focusing on these truths will help drive out the fears and unknowns that run through our minds like a pack of squirrels full of Easter candy.

Just when she thought she could take no more, that she would be unable to move or sleep because of the fear, the door cracked open. It was mom. “I just came to check on you… I thought I heard crying.” The girl grabbed her mom tightly and together they prayed. Her mother prayed for God’s protection; for release from fear; for a sense that God was there with her. And then they sang. They sang a favorite hymn, and then they sang through Isaiah 41:10. As they sang, mom could feel her daughter’s grasp loosen, the tension in her body release, bit by bit. Before long, she was asleep in her mother's arms.

Questions

1. When was the last time you were afraid?
2. What helped you overcome this fear?

Prayer

God, we thank you for caring for us in every situation. Thank you that even when our fears are maybe overblown, you meet us where we are. Help us to meditate on the truth of your Word to renew our minds and comfort our souls.
